Economy & Job Market
For those living near on or on base, Fort Sam Houston employs over 27,000 military and civilian personnel. One of the main employers on base is the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), formerly Brooke General Hospital. Since Fort Sam Houston is known as the “Home of the Combat Medic” and the “Home of Army Medicine,” it only made sense to build what would be one of the Army’s premier medical centers. In addition to the BAMC, Fort Sam Houston is also home to the Great Plains Regional Medical Command, Headquarters Dental Command, Headquarters Veterinary Command, the Institute for Surgical Research (trauma/burn center), the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute, and the Army Medical Department NCO Academy. Other military bases that contribute as a source of employment to the San Antonio metro area include Randolph AFB and Lackland AFB. Collectively, over 89,000 civilians and military personnel are employed in San Antonio’s defense industry. Per the recommendation of the United States Department of Defense, both Randolph and Lackland AFB will take part in the Base Realignment and Closure program (BRAC), which will transfer some departments and military personnel to Fort Sam Houston and a number of other military bases throughout the country.
Fort Sam Houston is located a mere 15 minute drive from the San Antonio metro, where many Fortune 500 companies are headquartered including Tesoro Petroleum Corp, Valero Energy Corp, Clear Channel Communications, and NuStar Energy.
